Air pollution has become the third biggest threat to health
According to the State of Global Air, 2019 report released by the US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI) and the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluations (IHME), contaminated air is causing more deaths than smoking. In 2017, there were 4.9 million deaths worldwide due to air pollution. Air pollution contributed 8.7 percent of the total deaths.
In 2017, 1.2 million people lost their lives due to air pollution in India. These deaths are a mixed result of outdoor (outdoor), household air and ozone pollution. Out of these 1.2 million deaths, 6,73,100 deaths were due to outdoor PM-2.5, while 4,81,700 deaths were due to domestic air pollution. Apart from India, 12 lakh in China, one lakh 28 thousand in Pakistan, one lakh 24 thousand in Indonesia, one lakh 23 thousand in Bangladesh, one lakh 14 thousand in Nigeria, one lakh eight thousand in America, 99 thousand in Russia, Brazil. 66 thousand deaths and 64 thousand deaths in the Philippines remain corrupt. Air pollution is causing an unprecedented increase in the number of sick people worldwide.
Ozone pollution has emerged as a major threat in the last decade. In the year 2017, due to ozone pollution, nearly five lakh people worldwide died prematurely. It has increased by 20 percent since 1990 and most of the increase has occurred during the last decade.
According to the report, people are dying prematurely due to air pollution in India and their age is reduced to 2.6 years. While the life expectancy was reduced by 18 months due to outdoor PM, it decreased by 14 months due to domestic pollution. This is much higher than the global average (20 months) of low life expectancy. Analysis suggests that most of the world's population is living under unhealthy conditions. More than 90 percent of the population does not breathe air according to air standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to a report published in the prestigious health magazine Lancet of LeBriten, India is the top polluter. Not only this, 23.26 lakh people died due to poisonous winds in India in 2017 alone. In this research conducted by the Global Alliance on Health Population, it has also been revealed that after India, China and America are also among the top 10 of the polluting countries. Pollution causes 174 deaths in every one lakh people
